From Eger to Budapest?

I'll end a conference in Eger, Hungary on May 29. My fight leaves Budapest at 1:00PM on the 30th. I'm wondering whether it will be better to stay overnight in Eger and take a train to the airport the next day, or take a conference bus to the airport on the 29th and find a place to stay near the airport to stay overnight. I've never traveled alone there. Tips, anyone?

Budapest airport is well away from the city center and may be a rather dull place to spend your last evening in Hungary. Don't recall there being a train to the airport, so you would probably need to go from Eger to Budapest and then take either metro/bus combo or taxi to the airport. You could do that by taking the 7:36 train from Eger, and you'd get to the airport around 11:00. Have you considered taking a train to Budapest on May 29 and spending your last night there? Lots to do in Budapest, and you can get from city center to the airport in under an hour using either public transportation, shuttle bus or taxi.

Thanks for responding. Yes, leaving Eger on that Thursday is a possibility, but I was going to take the conference bus back. However, they go to the airport. I don't mind a boring night so much; the preceding week will make it worthwhile. However, I could still take the train on Thursday.

The problem with all of it is not reading Hungarian. I've read that the signs can be confusing. So my problem is really specifics; at least with finding out whether there is a train that runs from Eger to the airport, or whether there is a hotel close to the airport.

Thanks again.

Can't read Hungarian? Well, you are in good company - there is nothing remotely close to that language (except for a distant relationship to Finnish, which is no picnic either). In reality, if you can read/speak German you will be able to get by, and if you can find a younger person to interpret into English, all the better.

Remember, Magyars have had to deal with not being able to read other languages all their lives, so quite a few have learned to cope.

When we were in Budapest and Eger, people told us they expected the Hungarian language to die out as there are so few Hungarians and they all speak another language too.

You won't have trouble finding plenty of people under the age of 30 who speak English. In fact, you might have trouble finding those that don't.

Heh..Rick, I wonder if you're going to be at the ELF conference? If so, I've done this Eger/Budapest thing several times at that very conference, and here's what I recommend.

Take the conference transportation to the airport on Thursday. Then, if you don't mind the extra money, take a taxi into Budapest and enjoy your evening. If you stay at a decent hotel, when you arrive just tell them you'd like a shuttle for the airport the next day. If you tell them your flight time, they'll set that up and tell you what time the shuttle will pick you up from your hotel. It's about 12 Euro, I think.

You may have time to do lots of fun things in that short time during the evening and next morning..grab dinner, maybe visit the Schzenyi Baths (my favorite), or just explore.
