We will be ending our time in northern France in Dinan. We will be heading over to England but would rather not go to London at that time. I see that the Ferry from St. Malo is an 8 hour crossing. Is that an enjoyable 8 hours or a dreadful 8 hours? Would I want to rent a berth? Would it be better to fly or take a train to Paris and then the Chunnel to London. We want to explore the southern England coast and are going to London later in our trip so don't really want to go there this early. We'll be returning a car on the France side and renting another in the UK. Any advise is appreciated.
Ferries suck, which is probably why I haven't ridden that one.
But, it'll probably be faster to Portsmouth than anything else. Probably a heck of a lot cheaper. It'll have a couple of places to eat. And a bar. Watching the channel shipping traffic is interesting.
If it's a night crossing, you'd be able to get six hours of sleep, so a berth isn't a bad idea. Sometimes they're mandatory. It'll show up when you book.
If it's a day crossing, don't bother. You can doze in a chair. Nobody'll swipe your stuff.
The car drop at Saint Malo is within walking distance of the ferry. You'll need a taxi or bus on the Portsmouth end, I think.
Think about spending the night at Saint Malo both for the food.......and for walking the walls since it beats Mont St Michel.
Thanks, Ed.
Ryanair flies from Dinan to London-Stansted. I've taken the flight, and if you are prepared for the Ryanair experience, it's actually not bad. Stansted is north of London and convenient to Cambridge if you want to start your English countryside visit there. The ferry ride could be fun--or it could be hours of being seasick.
Portsmouth is smack-dab in the middle of the southern coast and a good three hours from Stansted - - if you don't get tangled up on the London ring road.
Those ferries are purpose-built for Channel waters. I've made the Dunkerque run a gazillion times. Even in the winter storms all you get is the odd lurch, not the rhythmic rolling that induces the pukes.
Thanks for the replies. We're going for the Ferry because we want to do some exploring along the southern coast of England. Hopefully the seas will be calm.
