From Amsterdam to Ghent by rail

Can someone describe how to go from Amsterdam to Ghent by train?
Should you buy tickets in advance? Which rail line do you go on?(Any other tips.)

You do not have a choice of rail lines here. As elsewhere there is only one logical route...
Best is to book with the Dutch Railways, as there your trip starts.

So go to www.nsinternational.com, where you will find schedules and prices.

You do not need to buy tickets in advance, as you always can just go to the station, get a ticket and travel. But booking in advance may save you money.

The Ghent station you want is Gent Sint Pieters . You will have to change trains in Antwerp. The Antwerp station is considered a tourist attraction on its own, so if you have time, take a few minutes to view the ornate decoration, vaulted ceiling, etc.

You have several options to travel between Amsterdam and Belgium.

  • Eurostar from Amsterdam-Centraal (=CS) to Antwerpen-Centraal or Brussel-Zuid
  • Eurocity Direct from Amsterdam-Zuid to Antwerpen-Centraal or Brussel-Zuid
  • IC from Amsterdam-Centraal to Rotterdam, change to Eurocity from Rotterdam to Antwerpen-Centraal or Brussel-Zuid

IC is running from Antwerpen-Centraal to Gent Sint-Pieters or from Brussel-Zuid to Gent Sint-Pieters

PS: Brussel-Zuid = Bruxelles-Midi = Brussels-Midi
