Frankfurt and Italy Customs

Do you go thru customs in FRA if you are connecting on to Italy? I understand long, long lines? Another question: I am traveling standby out of FRA to either Milan or Florence(whichever flight I can get on): e Customs in either one of those cities that I will have to clear if that is my final destination? Will have no checked bags.

Do you mean passport control? No one is going to look in your bags as they don't care. All you have to do is show your passport and move on. It can go quickly or slowly depending on how busy the airport is that day. Most of the time in Frankfurt, it is pretty efficient and quick.

You will have immigration (passport control) in Frankfurt because you are entering the Schengen zone. If your bags were checked through to Italy, you would not have to go through customs until your final destination, but since you don't have a final destination yet, your bags will only be checked through to Frankfurt. If you have no checked bags, you'll still pass through the customs area in Frankfurt when you arrive, after going through immigration. However, as Jo points out, customs in Frankfurt is usually a formality. The exit door has two lanes, and one of them says "nothing to declare". I've always walked out through that lane and never had to wait.
