Frankfurt Airport - Rail Access

We are flying into Terminal 2D and are going to get the ICE train. Can anyone tell me about how long this takes or if there is a "best" way to get there. If our plane is on schedule we will have two hours and I assumed this was plenty of time. I have flown in and out of this airport a few times, but have always had a car. I know we will have to go through customs, but this has always been quick.
Thanks - Bill

William, There are two rail stations at FRA, one for the high speed trains (Flughafen Fernbahnhof) and one for the local trains (Flughafen RegionalBahnhof). As I recall, the ICE trains use the high speed station, which is accessed via a large walkway that goes over a highway. You'll see the tracks when you get to the end of the walkway. There's also a Bahn ticket office in that area. I believe that you'll have to use a Shuttle from Terminal 2D to Terminal 1, which is where you can access the trains. I'm sure Lee or one of the others will be able to fill-in the details. Happy travels!

OK, I'm here. The train stations are attached to Terminal 1 at FRA. They are, as Ken pointed out, very easy to get to from that terminal. If you are near the outside wall of Terminal 1, there will be escalators from the floor to the mezzanine, clearly marked for "Fernbahnhof". You go across a pedestrian bridge over the access road and through the building across the street to the the Banhnof. The ticket counter is on the same floor, to the left, as you enter the atrium of the Bahnhof. Your "problem" will be getting to Terminal 1. There is a shuttle bus from outside the front door of Terminal 2. It goes out and around the Fernbahnhof to come into the other side of Terminal 1, since the road in front is one way in the direction of Terminal 2. Make sure you go into the hall of Terminal 1, as there is no access to the Fernbahnhof from the outside. The best way, I think, is a "people mover", called the Skyline, from the top of Terminal 2 to the top of Terminal 1. There will be signs in Terminal 2 leading to it. You go up several floors by escalators or elevators. When you reach the Skyline station, you will not be able to take your luggage cart on the train, but there will probably be carts left at T1 by travelers going the other way. If you have two hours, that should be plenty of time. I'm guessing the trip from T2 to T1 by the Skyline might take 10 minutes.

Lee obviously knows what he's talking about and I don't have much to add except this: I had the same question, so I went to www.bahn.de and after browsing a bit on it, I found a link to station details. Once I found that, I explored a bit longer and eventually got to a page showing pdf files for both the long distance (fernbahnhof) and suburban stations at the Frankfurt airport. You can blow it up on screen to a readable size (it takes an electron microscope otherwise) and I also figured out how to print it blown up so I can carry a readable paper copy with me too. Hope this helps. pvt me if it doesn't make sense.

I found the station details on both Bahn.de and Rmv.de a bit confusing, so I made my own (www.germantravel-info.com/fra.htm). Still confusing? Next time I fly into FRA, I'm going to take some pictures of where you are going, but that's the best I have for now.

One additional point to mention for those arriving at or transiting through FRA, is that the Frankfurt airport now has an App for iPhone or iPod Touch. I haven't had an opportunity to use it on a trip yet, but it looks like it could be a very useful travel accessory. The flight information seems to be in "real time", as I'm able to see flights currently departing, which gate they're leaving from, whether the gate is open, etc. There's also a section on "Changing Terminals With The Skyline Train" Cheers!
