Frankfort Train Stations

I'm using the DB Bahn website to find departure times from Frankfort to Bacharach on June 29. One departure says 1:08pm from Frankfort(Main) hbf and one departure says 1:47pm from Frankfort HBF (tief). Are these two different stations? Thanks for your help. Jackie

First place, it's Frankfurt, with a 'u'. Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky. If you use Frankfort on the Bahn website, you might have trouble finding connections. The main part of the Frankfurt Hbf is at ground level and is called Frankfurt(Main) Hbf. There is also an underground station beneath Frankfurt Hbf. It's called 'tief' because tief means "deep" in German, and it services just the S-/U-Bahn. It looks like whether you take the S-Bahn to Mainz or a train leaving from the ground level, you will have to change to a regonal train in Mainz. Check the schedule to see when the train or S-Bahn arrives in Mainz. The S-Bahn generally make more stops and takes more time than the train. Also, to get to the tief station, you must go down escalators, which take time. One the other hand, the S-Bahn runs far more frequently than trains.

The Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof also has elevators going down to the tracks, so if you have luggage, you don't need to use the escalators if you don't want to. You will need track 103 downstairs to take the S-bahn to Mainz. These come every 15 min. or so on weekdays, so if you miss it, no big deal. The Regional train that leaves at 13:08 from track 21 upstairs, switches in Bingen.
