France to Sweden?

Family of four, we will travel summer '08 first in France then transfer to Sweden. What is the least expensive way to travel from Paris to Stockholm/Uppsala? Flying is quickest but probably most expensive. Are there cheaper rail routes connecting Paris to Stockholm in a somewhat direct way? Thanks in advance!

Don't discount flying. I have often found that inter-Europe flights can be just as competitive as rail (sometimes more). Especially once you figure in the value of your time, and givin the distance you are trying to cover.

The Lonely Planet guides have a "getting there and away" section. It deals with transport to a region not just from the U.S. or over seas but also from common points in Europe. Find the book on Sweden and see if they list the small airlines that travel into Stockholm from W. Europe.

What a diverse and fun trip!

According to www.whichbudget.com, a search engine for budget airlines in Europe, your choices are Paris Beauvais-Stockholm S. Skavsta on Ryanair and Paris Orly-Stockholm Arlanda on Norwegian Air. While Ryanair's fares are cheaper, the airports it uses are a long way from Paris and Stockholm. You will have extra time and expense getting to and from those airports.

Flying will probably be the cheapest. You should be able to get a ticket for $100 to $200 on a major airline like SAS. The train would be a terribly long ride ... 20+ hours. I would also recommend that you fly into Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) which is about halfway between Stockholm and Uppsala. From Arlanda there are regular buses to Uppsala and the journey is only about 30 minutes. Some of the discount airlines fly into Skavsta which is about more than an hour south of Stockholm by bus so not very convenient to Uppsala.

Ryanair fly to Skavsta (80 miles South of Stockholm) from Beavais (Paris), Marseille or Hahn which is on the German side close to Luxembourg or Metz. www.ryanair.com
