How can a US citizen/resident obtain a French senior pass for traveling all over France without planning the route and buying the exact itinerary ticket ahead of time?

You'll find your information at http://www.sncf.co.uk/Default.aspx?tabid=2888 We spent 5 weeks in Lyon this summer, also traveling about. I thought of getting a card but it didn't pencil out for the trips we were taking. There are time limits on time of day traveled (blue periods) and day of week, mainly to avoid rush hour (the English OAP plan works this way too). I was often able to get the senior rate when I asked (I'm 63, the cutoff is 60) but occasionally didn't get it.
