France Rail Passes, for future reference

I'm sure we did not use our rail passes in the most efficient way and thought I'd solicit input now for the next trip. We paid $658 for a rail pass that got two of us from Paris to Cannes, and Cannes to CDG airport with first class reservations (we'd goofed and booked ourselves to and from Nice not realizing that Mougins was closer to Cannes so I'm sure we paid more than we needed to right off the bat). Then we had this odd ball third day of travel available on the pass. We weren't planning any other big trip within France so we used it to go from Cannes to "the end of the line" in Ventimiglia, Italy (which I highly recommend a great town). The trip to and from Italy would have cost, as I recall, about 44 euros for the two of us if we'd paid cash. (And would you believe that station personnel went to great lengths to make sure we understood we were not getting our money's worth using the pass that way). We actually spent 56 euros getting to and from Chartres the previous week not realizing that the train along the Riviera was so inexpensive (and we were travelling with another couple with the same tickets so we wanted to save our last pass to do something with them; they went to Versailles the day we went to Chartres). Should we have just bought separate tickets for our trips to and from the Riviera, rather than a railpass? Or should we maybe even have flown rather than take the train?
