I have rented a car for an upcoming trip to France. Do you think it's necessary to go to AAA and buy an international drivers license to have along with my US? Thank you!
craig, I don't believe it's compulsory in France, however I usually pack along an IDP every year as I'd rather have one if asked by Police. Some members here have reported being asked for an IDP when renting cars in England, which is something I really don't understand. The basic purpose of an IDP is to provide translation of a driver's home license, so not sure why that would be an issue in the U.K.? Cheers!
Not for France.
Some countries require an International Driving Permit - not a license. France does not. Ask yourself - Is it better to have it and not need it or need it and not have it. As an old engineer and college professor I tend to error on the side of having it and not needing it. Would it make life easier if stopped by the police ? Probably.
I've never gotten an IDP in 20+ years of traveling in France. On the other hand, I've never been stopped by the police.
I've been through more French roadblocks than you can shake a stick at and nobody was ever interested in one.
