France Fly Ryan Air?

Planning trip to Paris and the South, then to Alps and return via Geneva - May 2009. I am very confused by the fares I see on RyanAir from Paris to Marseille.

Is this possible? Or is it some sort of scam? One way from Paris to Marseille – NO Euros, just taxes/fees? I don’t get it!

Any suggestions / recommendations much appreciated!

A few of the low cost ( cheapo ) airlines in Europe have sales like that,, yes, price may be one euro, but then add taxes, AND luggage charge, and if you want to reserve a seat that is extra etc. etc. You CAN get some great deals,, IF you book fast, travel VERY LIGHT and take NO extra features,, read and book tickets carefully. But it is possible.
I am surprised the taxes are that low,, did you go all the way through the booking.. do that first ,, to make sure of price.

I tried booking a flight for May,, all gone,, maybe you have a different way?? I did book( fake booking) one way from Paris to Marseilles in Feb.. after all booking stuff done totalled 24 euros, which is still a good price. There was a fee for airport check in,, I don't think you can check in if you are not EU .. and don't have a CC that is micro chipped so you have to do airport check in, and no baggage.

Thanx so much for sleuthing this! No, I could not get flights for May -- probably they are just not booking that far out. I was also using fake date just to try to see what the fare might be.

I guess it all boils down to a definite "Maybe!"

On another note -- do you know, what is the deal with CC w/chip? I understand that is necessary in Paris for using Velo bikes, too. I guess I will need to check with my bank. Can we even get those in the US?

Jacki: Answering your last question--this has been discussed frequently here and no one has indicated they have been able to get that kind of credit card in the US.

Hi Jacki,
I've booked with Ryanair a couple of times now, and yes, sometimes the seat is free and you just pay taxes- it's not a scam. But I agree with Pat, that's a low figure for taxes.
Also, they charge for everything after (like checking in at the airport) and also for any bags. You must read the booking very thoroughly.
They only book a limited time ahead, I think it's a couple of months.
Also, they often use airports that are a bit further away from the city you're flying to; for example, their flights to Barcelona land in Gerona, the flight to Milan goes to Bergamo. Thye usually have good links into the city though, just look under Airport Transfers on their website.
Good luck!

Beauvais is a long way from Paris. If you take the shuttle bus from Paris to the airport, you will need to be at Porte Maillot 3hr15min before your flight's scheduled departure time. The fare is €13.

Starting from central Paris and traveling by train, you can be in downtown Marseille before your flight is scheduled to depart! (It's a little over three hours on a TGV.) While the standard 2nd class fare is around €80, an advance (up to three months allowed) online discount fare booked at www.voyages-sncf.com can be as low as €22. Sit back and relax in a roomy seat, see the countryside, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Thanx for the tip on the train. I did not realize Beauvais was so far from Central Paris. I did check the fare earlier and thought it was much higher so that is why I was looking at air. Will try it again. I would prefer to go by rail anyway!

Also -- found some info on the Smart Cards here... www.smartcardalliance.org It seems they just have not caught on in the US, but have been around minimally in the States since 2000. Providian Clear VISA Card appears to be the most well known. Possibly also related to the new Passport Card. I am heading out of town, but will do some more research on them when I return and continue to plan the trip.

Thank you to all who have provided such great replies here! What a fabulous resource! Jacki
