We are driving all through France and also from Istria down to Dubrovnik and would like to know the best maps/directories to use. I understand that we could use the internet but this may get expensive because of roaming. Any suggestions please?
For road maps and atlases I always look at the Stanfords website first. They are a specialist map and travel guide retailer in London and their range is very good. I did a search for roadmaps and atlases, specifying Croatia and France. If this link works correctly it should take you to the results. Give it a few seconds to load, and there should be a couple of road atlases that include Croatia, together with loads of results for France. On the second page there are various AA publications which I like quite a lot, in different scales and sizes. They also have lots of options for road atlases that cover all of Europe, but you need to look at the samples in the individual listings and think about the scale. Personally I don't like navigating anywhere with a 1:1,000,000 scale map. Also check their guidebook listings. They have a depth and breadth that only a specialist can offer.
