Hi all, I'm debating whether to order a special meal for my flight from Boston to Frankfurt. I do not eat meat though do eat fish. There are a number of options, but some posts I've read elsewhere say that by asking for a special meal, you're stuck with that one choice, whereas if you go with the general meal you'll have a few choices. Has anyone ordered the vegetarian or fish meals on Lufthansa? Or any comments on the food in general? Thanks!
We've typically gotten a choice of either chicken or pasta, both come with a salad, bread, and some kind of dessert. We've never ordered special meals.
The last time I flew Lufthansa I thought everything was fine, food wise. A small kid ran up the aisle of the 707 (I think it was) and bowled into the flight attendant who spilled liquid onto me. I wound up with a cleaning voucher. The route was Frankfurt to JFK in NYC, the year was 1972. It may be different in recent months.
We flew Lufthansa last summer from LAX to Munich and, as Maureen said, our choices were chicken or pasta also, so you should be fine. Food was decent (for airplane food), but service was definitely a cut above the other lines we've flown to Europe (Delta & American).
I think Lufthansa is a touch better but most are marginal. As a part of our jet lag routine, we do not take any meals on the flight to Europe. We are doing a little time shifting prior to boarding so take the evening meal around 3,4 pm so we are in a sleep mode by take off.. We ignore all food service till breakfast just prior to landing. For us, that works well with beating jet lag.
Renee, I've flown Lufthansa on a number of occasions with "code share" flights, and the quality of the meals has been quite good. I don't remember too much detail on the menu choices, but vaguely recall a choice between chicken and beef. I don't remember if there were any vegetarian or fish choices (wasn't really paying attention to those)? You may get some ideas by having a look at www.airlinemeals.net/browse.php?id=2147&start=1&x=1 (of course, Business Class passengers get better meals than the ordinary mortals in Coach). You could also have a look at This Website. Happy travels!
Hi Renee, We flown Lufthansa many times, as recently as last November. It seems the choice of pasta or chicken with a salad, roll, butter and a "dessert" never changes. As others stated, pretty much standard airline fare. Paul
I flew Lufthansa last may and ordered a vegeterian meal which was fair and not as good as the Air France vegeterian meal. Now airlines will usually offer a pasta dish which has no meat along with the other entrees.
It's kind of all bad, no matter what you order. You only get one choice if you order a special meal, and generally no substitutes (You're "special" so they're not likely to accommodate you in other ways). Even with choice on the regular meal, it's only two choices at best. Be aware that the "pasta" may not actually be vegetarian, so if you rely on that suggestion you may be out of luck (my last international flight it was beef and chicken, no pasta). I see that Lufthansa now offers a wider variety of special meals, so you may be able to one that suits you (I once ordered a "vegetarian" meal that was actually vegan = no cheese, no dairy, no butter, no taste).
Most menu choices are going to have some kind of meat in them, so if you are a vegetarian, then order that menu. I have had pretty good luck with veggie menus on flights. The only time I felt cheated was when everyone else got a cookie, except me. I guess they thought vegetarians wouldn't want to eat chocolate chip cookies!
The last time I flew with Lufthansa was in June 2007 to FRA. The meals on both flights were good, usually take whatever chicken dish is served, no complaints...good strong coffee on Lufthansa. Over-all, I prefer the food on Air France as the best I've encountered on airlines.
Hi Renee We have traveled on LF several times. I have ordered a gluten free meal every time They have ben quite good and after traveling on several carriers I will only travel on LF now.
Order what you need you will be taken of.
