Ending a trip in Scotland with a short genealogy visit in Aberdeen. Wondering if it makes sense to fly to Heathrow from there or take the train back to Edinburgh or Glasgow to fly home Seems an overnight at airport hotel are kind of expensive in those two cities. Anyone have experience at Aberdeen airport? Other thoughts?
How are you getting to Scotland?
You'll need to do some comparisons on Google Flights or a similar site to see what will work best for your dates.
Don't purchase separate tickets. You want one multi city or open jaw ticket. No overnight hotel or trains required.
For example, from LAX to Edinburgh, then return Aberdeen to LAX, all one ticket. You would change planes in London Heathrow in both directions. A quick look at June shows British Airways roundtrip starting around $885.
For comparison, airfares flying roundtrip the same dates to Edinburgh are $857 or Glasgow at $881.
I'm very familiar with Aberdeen Aiport. It's a small airport and easily managed.
I've also stayed at airport hotels at both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. (Hamtpon at Edinburgh and the Holiday Inn Express at Glasgow.) I've also stayed at the Crown Plaza at Aberdeen Airport.
My suggestion is to look at total price--Cost of flying from the different airports, trains, hotels, etc. Then look at times. Which is better for you?
As for me....if I was in Aberdeen, I'd fly to Heathrow and then back home.
I presume that you could also easily fly via either Dublin or Amsterdam. Dublin has the advantage of US pre-clearance so you would arrive home effectively as a domestic passenger.
Thanks for the responses! Flying from Aberdeen thru Heathrow or Dublin is coming up about the same price. And I’ve read about the pre clearance in Dublin, but we have global entry so our arrival in LA is pretty fast already.
Appreciate the input!
You might also look at flying via Amsterdam. I've done that twice, the first time in/out of Aberdeen and the 2nd time out of Edinburgh, both times to Seattle. I'm a Delta flyer so this was a pretty easy connection. Also in Amsterdam when you transit thru there from the US to the UK you stay in the non-schengen area of the airport so no passport control, no security. VERY easy.
I agree about the Aberdeen Airport...small, easily navigable. Also very easy Passport control and Customs when arriving from Amsterdam.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Aberdeen which is next to the Crown Plaza and connected most of the way to the airport by a covered walkway.
