Flying through CDG

I will soon be on a 4-flight trip from Arkansas to Trømso, Norway: Little Rock > Charlotte > Paris > Helsinki > Trømso. CRAZY.
So, three questions:

  1. Would it be dumb or really smart to check my bag all the way through? The ticket was purchased through American, all the way to Norway. It just seem there are lots of opportunities to lose my bag! It will be a carry-on size.
  2. I've heard of nightmares transiting Charles de Gaulle. If I fly into Paris on AA and out on Finnair (AA's partner), will that be difficult? I have 3 hours, and what I've been able to find seems to indicate that everything is Terminal 2 A or B, but I don't know if that's right.
  3. Is there anything else I should be thinking about for this marathon? I'm AA Platinum and I think will be able to access the lounge, as it's an international trip.

I'll do other flying after the Norway piece, but those hops will be much more manageable. Thanks in advance!

  1. With that many connections, if you are taking a carry on bag that meets the size and weight restrictions, then don't check it.

  2. As long as your flight into CDG isnt seriously late arriving, you should have ample time to clear Passport Control and get to your next gate. Just follow the yellow Transfer/Correspondance signs. This link provides more information: https://www.parisaeroport.fr/en/passengers/flights/connecting-flights

I would definitely do carry on only with all those stops. It would be a drag (and very expensive) to have to replace your wardrobe in Tromso if your bag got lost.

Three hours should be fine for your connection at CDG.

Bring a refillable water bottle, some snacks, a battery pack for your phone, and lots of downloaded movies.

Definitely carryon only if your bag is the right size.

Three hours at CDG should be fine. Its a bit of a tricky airport as you often can't tell if you'll be able to transfer by just walking btwn gates or need to take a tram. If a tram you'll have to go through security screening. But 3 hours is plenty.

Thanks, all! I'll be careful about the carry on plan, either strictly sticking to the requirements or packing wisely if it looks like I'll have to check the bag instead. And I'll trust that I've got time for whatever my adventure may bring at CDG.

Having traveled through CDG twice last year (September & November with connection times of 1 hr 30 minutes and 1 hr 15 minutes respectively) I believe that you’ll have plenty of time. Several years ago those times would have not be enough for me. With 3 hours you’ll have time for shopping, fine dining, napping and whittling the time away.

I don’t see a time problem making your connections if they land reasonably on time. After many years, I confess that I have given up carry on. Dragging my bag through airports, fighting down narrow plane aisles to try and find overhead bin space is just too aggravating. Waiting for bags at the carousel? I’m going on a 2-3week trip. What’s waiting for 15 minutes?

I take a compact personal item with necessaries for 48hours. Airlines have greatly improved checked baggage reliability. Although this past weekend my nephew flew Palm Beach>Atlanta>CDG>Marseille. He arrived Monday, got his bag Tuesday afternoon.

Just wanted to follow up and let you know how this went. My normal carry on is too big for Europe, and my little carry on wasn’t big enough for me! So I packed what would reasonably need for several days in a carry on backpack and checked what is normally my carry on. I still packed light and was proud of myself. In the end, my checked bag was the second suitcase on the conveyor belt at the Tromsø airport. Thanks to all of you for your wise counsel!
