flying munich-barcelona-rome?

Hi all: I had what I thought was a good itinerary until of course my frequent flyer tickets did not cooperate! So now I am going into Munich on 6/1 (arriving 6/2) - for 3 full days, needing to get to Barcelona on 6/6 to pick up our cruise on 6/7. I assume flying will be best - I guess I would prefer MUC-BCN, but I know some of the budget carriers fly to different airports. My question is, how far out are those other airports for those cities, and how much cost savings do you think would be worth it to fly out of the usual airports? We also have kids 9 and 11 with us if that matters. I guess after the cruise we will try for Rome.... may have to switch that up once I see what return flights I can get, so leaving cruise heading to FCO - so same question regarding flying to Rome. And also, I know no crystal ball... but what would you say would be a good/decent price for a MUC-BCN and a BCN-FCO flight? Should I try 2 one ways or a multi city? Thanks in advance!!! :) Kim

Get familiar with skyscanner.com (kayak.com is similar). Those sites are showing flights on Vueling and Iberia from MUC to BCN next month for around $110-130 per person. However those airlines' flights aren't posted for June 2014, only Lufthansa. Ryanair flies out of Girona, an hour and a half north of Barcelona. Avoid. Looks like Ryanair also has flights from BCN to Rome. Some budget airlines use Rome Ciampino airport (CIA) which is actually a little closer to the city center than Fiumcino.

Also be aware that RyanAir does not use Munich's airport. Instead, they fly out of Memmingenberg, on the other side (west) of Bavaria, almost 3 hours by train and bus (there is no train service to the airport) from downtown Munich. Also, Ciampino airport (used by Ryan) is not directly accessible by train. There are buses to the Ciampino train station and light rail into Rome or buses directly to Rome.
