I am flying into Memmingem via Ryanair and will be staying in Munich. What is the CHEAPEST way to get from Munich to Fussen and then to mad Ludwigs castle and then back to Munich?
The buses that go to Hohenschwangau are 73, 78, 9606, and 9651, and some of those buses will be going in the opposite direction, away from Hohenschwangau. Whatever the bus number, the buses for Hohonschwangau all leave from Haltestelle 2. There is a picture of the bus stop sign with the bus numbers show on my webpage.
The station map for Füssen Bahnhof also shows the bus stops and the numbers of the buses that stop there.
According the the Neuschwanstein site, the charge for the horse carriage (Pferdekutsche) has gone up slightly, €6 up, €3 back.
Memmingen is really close to www.oberstdorf.de, www.oberstaufen.de and even Lindau at the Lake of Constance, which all are gems and very popular among European tourists (but hardly any Americans as their books don't seem to tell them about the really beautiful and still affordable places)... http://web20.icserver3.de/photozoom.php?photo_id=285
Sshhh, Andreas! The lack of Ricknicks is one of the nicer things about Lindau...
Yeah, definitely take the train and bus combination. The alternative is to take an organized tour, which is more expensive. The only benefits of an organized tour are the direct bus from Munich and, if you're going in the high season and tickets are sold out, the tour companies reserve tickets ahead of time.
