I'm trying to find a flight that leaves from Heathrow and goes to Rome CIA airport. I've been looking all over, at the budget airlines, and www.whichbudget.net but have had no real luck finding a reasonably priced flight. I really, really do not want to have to fly out of Stanstead (which is where so many of the budget flights operate out of). What about flying from Heathrow to the other airport in Rome (FCO)? Is it really that far outside of Rome? I've heard CIA is the way to go. Any insights are appreciated!
Vanessa,
For a flight to Rome, FCO would be the better airport to use. It's the largest and has easy access to Roma Termini via the Leonardo Express.
Have you already booked a flight into LHR? If so, that limits your choices somewhat for budget flights to other destinations. If there's a possibility you could fly into LGW, you could use EasyJet to Rome.
Happy travels!
Our experience with connecting flights to Rome through London is that we had to shift to Gatwich. I think more domestic flights go out f Gatwich than HRow. One of the reasons that discount airlines are discount is because they operate out of discount airports. Why would you want to go to CIA -- FCO is more convenient.
Vanessa - We flew British Airways a couple of times from LHR to FCO. We ususally check Kayak.com for the price and then check the American Airlines website as well (they are a partner of BA - select all carriers on the Advanced Search option). The American Airlines website was much cheaper the past two times we booked. Just be sure to check the departure airport as the LGW flights are also listed when searching for the LHR flights.
I just check with British Airways. I don't know when you are flying, so I put in June 1st as an imiginary date. Flights out of Heathrow into Fiumicino (Rome) is currently 56 GBP.
No, we don't have anything official booked yet. And we don't necessarily have to fly out of Heathrow either. I was just trying to avoid the commute to another London airport. I don't think I've flown from LGW. How long does it take to get there from the city (London)? I'm glad I thought to ask about FCO vs CIA. I guess I was misinformed! I appreciate all the speedy replies.
Vanessa,
I'd actually choose FCO over CIA. It is really easy to get into the city from FCO by the train. It only takes about 30 minutes.
From London, BA often has very competitive rates to Italy. Go to a site like sidestep.com or kayak.com and search using "LON" and "ROM" as your two airport codes. This will show you options at all of the London airports and both Rome airports. BA flies from both Gatwick and Heathrow to Rome. Gatwick is easy to get to from Victoria Station (about 35 minutes).
Gatwick is only about 30-35 minutes from Victoria. There is an express, but it only saves 5 minutes and is about 40% more if I remember correctly.
Hi Vanessa,
The thing is, Heathrow is the largest UK airport and many budget airlines are avoiding it. If you want to fly with budget airlines from London, you should consider flying from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton. Unfortunatelly, you don't want to fly from Stansted, whilst Ryanair is the only airline flying from London to CIA and they fly from Stansted:

Fiumicino is not too far from Rome, considering you have Leonardo Express, which takes only 30 mins from airport to city centre. If you fly to Fiumicino, you have the choice of easyJet, Germanwings or Air Berlin, all flying from Gatwick or Stansted:

I hope this helps. Have fun in Rome.

Here's another idea. If you have the time, take the train. You can take the Eurostar (Chunnel) train from St. Pancras to Paris Gare Nord in less time than you can fly. There is a train that leaves Paris Gare Lyon around 7:45 AM and gets you into Rome about 7:30 PM that evening (with a change in Milan) or take any of several later trains. Lots of choices. It is a beautiful ride through the French countryside and into the Alps. You see a lot more than from 30,000 feet.
