Flying Alitalia

We have a connecting flight from Rome to Naples on Alitalia. Am wishing we just booked to Rome and on to Naples by train. After all the nightmarish stories one hears about Alitalia, you can imagine my concern. I plan to pack as light as possible so as not to have to check my bag on the Naples route. Any suggestions from the experts on the helpline.

Can you just ignore that leg of your flight, depart the plane, take a train into Rome and catch a another train to Naples from there? In this situation, unless there is a long wait between planes, I would probably just take the plane to Naples and look for a different flight next time.

This is a question and a suggestion.

Please beware of the last suggestion - if you are returning home on the same ticket, the airline will cancel all your remaining flights if you purposely miss one of them. If this is a one way ticket or if the Rome-Naples segment is the very last one in the ticket and you haven't checked bags then you probably won't have any issues skipping the last segment.

My suggestion is since you have already paid for this segment you might as well use it. It will cost you some money and probably a lot more time to get into Rome and then take the train from there.

I agree that you should just go ahead with your planned air travel at this point, but chalk selecting Alitalia as your carrier up to new learning for next time. I’ve observed that many folks here start worrying about Alitalia only after they’ve purchased tickets. There’s much more to an airline than price, and it would be wise to do a little research before committing…Alitalia’s poor reputation is all over the internet. Carrying-on should help alleviate one of the common concerns about this carrier. Good luck & happy travels!

Alitalia is worth avoiding if you can, but it is unlikely to be any more nightmarish than any other airline as long as you aren't checking a bag. For peace of mind's sake, go online and check for the next two flights to Naples after the one you are ticketed for. That way, if you get delayed, you can tell the gate agent what flight to try to re-book you onto. (Alitalia staff in Milan once waved us aside when we were in that situation, telling me that they couldn't find out when the next available flight was! If I had known the specific flight numbers, maybe it would have gone better for us then...)

If it makes you feel any better, I flew Alitalia from Newark-Rome a few years ago and the flight was perfectly fine. Better, actually, than the following year's flight on the usually higher-ranked KLM.

There are a lot of horror stories about Alitalia, but there are also a lot of people who do just fine flying them. Pack light, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. No point in stressing yourself out now. :-)

Thank you all for your suggestions and insights. I didn't choose Alitalia, I have Continental to thank for that one. I will pack light and not check my bags and hope for the best. After all, I will be in Italy. It doesn't get much better than that!

Do you mean that you didn’t realize the connection was a codeshare flight? That can be easy to miss if you’re not familiar with the partnerships, alliances, and/or codeshare arrangements. Continental (and most everyone else) posts codeshare details on the different itinerary options when you’re searching for flights. Sometimes, you have to dig a little, but Continental’s is right there as a footnote. Although, I must admit that I didn't realize Continental and Alitalia were still aligned. You’re right…it’s hard to beat Italy. Don’t worry about it now…just go enjoy your trip!
