Flying Aer Lingus from NYC to Rome

My husband and I will be flying Aer Lingus from JFK to Rome, with a stop over in Dublin. What can we expect as far as clearing immigration and customs in Dublin? Do we need to pick up our bags and re-check them? Neither one of us has traveled to Europe before, and it would be helpful to know what to expect. Thanks!

You bags will be checked through to Rome and go through customs there. You will go through immigrations in Dublin. Everything is mostly a walk through. Much simpler than returning to the US.

Your bags will be checked through to Rome where you will clear customs. You will clear immigration in Dublin (easy). Returning if you go through Dublin you will clear U.S. immigration (and I believe Customs) there. I'm not personally aware of anywhere else this happens (outside of say, Vancover Canada) but it's GREAT. You land in the U.S. and you're on your way! In Rome the way to the Leonardo Express at the airport (dedicated train to the main Rome train station) is easy to find. English widely spoken and posted. For your first trip maybe take an official cab from the airport to your hotel - 40Euros. Only take an official cab! Look for the line outside the terminal. Do your FINAL pack three days ahead of departure (this after throwing out all the maybe I will need this/that crap), get some rest, take a deep breath and YEAH I'm in Rome:) What fun, a first time trip to Rome is like nothing else. P.S. I find cabs useful and not to expensive in Rome and a great time saver.

By saying "stop over in Dublin" do you mean you're leaving the airport for a few hours to explore the city, or you are just changing planes? If you are just changing planes, then you will not go through immigration in Dublin, instead it will be Rome as Ireland is not part of the Schengen Treaty.

Thanks for the replys everyone. By "stop over in Dublin", I mean we'll be changing planes there. Unfortunately, the Aer Lingus website indicates that our flight from Dublin to JFK is not eligible for US Customs/Immigration in Dublin (I think it's because of the time of the flight), so we'll have to do that once we're back in NY. It's probably better that way, as there's only an hour and 15 minutes between our flights.

I liked Aer Lingus, but you will go through security in Dublin when you leave your plane from JFK and try to get to your connecting flight. This experience alone took us 50 minutes in 2010. Hopefully the situation has improved.
