I have a ticket to Rome,Italy from San Francisco and return ticket to San Francisco fron Athens,Greece. I stll need to purchase a ticket from Rome or Florence to Athens. Can anyone tell if I can purchase this prior to leving the USA?

Most certainly, and it is probably best (Cheaper) that you do.
I can suggest www.aegeanair.com or go to www.whichbudget.com to find other possible budget airline flying the route.
The transaction and prices will show in Euros, so convert in your head, the actual amount in Dollars will show on your bill.

Check out whichbudget.com for details on discount airline flights in Europe. It will definitely be cheaper to purchase here before you leave.

We just flew from Rome to Athens last week on Aegean Air and it was fine. I purchased it online a few weeks earlier. One note is that the check-in counter at Rome's airport doesn't open until 2 hours before the flight, so we were in line for awhile before it even opened. We should've spent that time trying to find something to eat before going through security at the airport. ;)
