Fly out of Naples instead of Rome?

We are planning to visit Sorrento in July (after touring further the north in Italy). We are considering flying out of Naples, rather than taking the train to Rome and flying out of Rome. Is there any problems or worries I should consider? We would probaby hire a driver or shuttle to take us from Sorrento to Naples airport and our flight would leave Naples at 12 noon. I've heard horrible things about Naples and am wondering why so many people visiting Sorrento take the 2 hr train ride to Rome. Thank you!

It depends on where you are flying to. Many tourists fly out of Rome because these flights go directly to the U.S.A. or other non-EU locations. If you are going to other EU locations (i.e. London, Madrid, Vienna, Munich, Paris, Geneva, Prague, Amsterdam, etc.), flying out of Naples can be just fine. If you are flying home, you can still fly out of Naples but you will most likely connect in another major EU city to pick up your flight back to the U.S.A.

Yes, we would connect in Germany, which is fine with us, and then onto the U.S. I just wanted to make sure that there were no problems or issues I should be aware of with all that I hear about Naples.

Deanna, we have flown out of the Naples airport several times. It is a small and easy airport to navigate, about 4 miles outside of Naples.

The TI people are just wonderful, and will help you with any questions that you have.

There is a wonderful bus (Curreri bus co. $10EU, 75 minutes,http://www.curreriviaggi.it )that stops right out front, that goes to Sorrento, and back 6 times/day. I believe the 1st run from Sorrento is at 6:30AM, then 8:30 AM.

There is also easy access by bus (10 minutes) from the airport to downtown Naples, where you can make the connection to go to the Archological Museum.

You must go to this museum, because it has all of the treasures that were plundered from Pompeii. I actually found it more facinating than Pompeii!

Don't worry about Naples...it is a fun place to visit! One of our most memorable experiences was sitting at an outdoor cafe, not too far from the downtown rail station, eating dinner, and watching the crazy motor scooter drivers.

I would fly out of Naples if you can because you will get more time in Sorrento and you are not backtracking.

We have taken the airport bus both ways several times but these days, for flights departing morning to midday, prefer to take a private transfer for the return journey to the airport, about 80 Euros for two.

The reason being, apart from the convenience, is that the morning buses from Sorrento are very popular and on one occasion it looked as if we were not going to get on. However another bus was summoned and we arrived in plenty of time. I know it is silly but just the possibility of missing my flight put me off using the morning services.
