Fly into Edinburgh or Newcastle to get to Alnwick

Our daughter will be studying abroad this fall in Alnwick. We will be visiting her and I'm wondering which is easier - fly into Edinburgh or Newcastle. Edinburgh is about $70 cheaper per person.

My preference would be Edinburgh, which warrants a visit, a wonderful town.

Depends on what you mean by easier? Are you just going to get in a car and go to Alnwick? On distance alone Newcastle is 35 miles away whereas Edinburgh is 95 mile away. Without having been to either airport myself I would also think Newcastle would easier as Edinbugh Airport I believe is on the farside of the city with relation to Alnwick whereas Newcastle is on the nearside.

If I was going to spend any time in either city though I would jump at the chance to bee in Edinburgh which is great.

Hi Shelly,

If you fly into Newcastle you can take the Metro from the Airport to Haymarket in the City Centre. From there there are lots of buses direct to Alnwick (501, 505 or 518), the fare will be about £5 one-way. Since Alnwick isn't on the railway line, this is probably the easiest. In terms of a city break, Newcastle really is undiscovered. It's a bit of a party town, but there are plenty of more cultured things to do. Have a look here: http://www.visitnewcastlegateshead.com/

From Edinburgh, your best bet is to take the airport bus into Edinburgh, then the train to Berwick. From Berwick the 501 and 505 (not the 518) run every hour from the Railway station direct to Alnwick. On a Sunday there are only three buses, however.

If you would plan on hiring a car, Newcastle Airport is considerably closer (around 45 mins) than Edinburgh Airport (around 1h45).

We've decided to fly into Edinburgh as the fares were so much cheaper. We've also decided to spend a few days here as I think it would be silly to land in the city and not be able to see any of the sites. It'll also give us a little time to rest and regroup before heading on to Alnwick. Thanks for the info.
