Hi, thinking of taking the train from Florence to Fiumicino the night before we leave, as we have an early morning flight on Saturday back to the US...does anyone know, does this train take me to the airport vicinity ? and would I be within walking distance/taxi to a hotel to spend the night...?
Thanks in advance for your reply
There is no direct train from Florence to Fiumicino airport. You take a regular train (Italian Eurostar) to Rome's Termini station, then catch the Leonardo shuttle from the station to the airport. The Leonardo shuttle stops at a station directly across the access road from the terminals at Fiumicino.
How early is your flight out of FCO? The Leonardo express does not make its first run until 5:50am. It's a 22-minute journey to the airport station. Hopefully, your flight isn't before 8:30am for this process to get you there in time for an international check-in.
you have 2 choices. 1) take the train Florence to Roma Termini, spend the nite in a local hotel in Rome (tons within walking distance), then a morning cab/shuttle or the Leonardo train to the airport. 2) train Florence to Termini, then the Leonardo to a hotel in/near the airport. The hotels in/near the airport tend to be expensive and they're Hotelville; you're no longer in Italy, you could be in a hotel anywhere. However depending on what time your flight leaves in the morning, that may be your best option.
Hi, we leave Saturday morning (in June) at 930 in the morning, and on Friday, the day before we are going to do a tour/drive of San Ginigmano, get back to Florence and then either head into Rome or go straight out to the airport area and stay out there, have not made reservations for that night yet, as I don't know if I want to get up at 5 in the morning in Rome and then head out to the airport ???
Thanks for all your thoughts and replies..

Can someone tell me when travelling in between cities...Rome, Venice and Florence, do I need to purchase a 1st class ticket or 2nd class on the trains, we are a family of four travelling together ?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Terry
Traveling 2nd class on the high-speed trains is just fine. 1st class will only get you a bit more leg and arm room. Also, if you have at least one child under 12 and one adult, you can get a family rate of 20%. Seats are limited but on the Venice, Florence, Rome runs, there are 50 trains a day. You should try to get this discount as soon as you arrive in any of these cities for your future travel days. If you can't get the family rate, try for the Amica fare which provides a 10% discount.
CLICK HERE to see Trenitalia's Promotions page. Look at the fare topics on the right side.
Hi, thanks for the advice, I was on the trenitalia site late night, and although we are a family, our children are 19 and 16 so don't think I can do the family discount and I really could not understand the amica one, should I pursue trying to read through that again. I thought it explained the fare structure for the amica fare as being flexible with returning the tickets if need be?
Terry
Terry, here's the scoop directly from the Trenitalia web page.
"The Amica fare is the economical solution that lets you to choose your journey in advance. It has limited seats, which vary according to day, train and class.
The new "Amica" tariff allows you to travel with a 20% reduction off all the medium- to long-distance trains when booking by midnight of the day before departure. The minimum price is 10 euro."
(Me again). If you can purchase your tickets soon after your arrive, you can ask for the Amica fare. As stated above, they are limited and may not be available on the train run you want. But, you may find an earlier or later train that has the special fare.
There's nothing really flexible about these fares. Somewhat similar to regular standard fares, there are certain change, missed train and refund rules. The website was just explaining them. Just ask for the Amica fare. If it's available, they'll sell it to you. If you don't miss your train, you just saved 20%.
Terry, I live in Rome and travel trains often. The AMICA ticket is about the only discount that is available to non-EU adults. As Larry says there are some restrictions, but the one that comes into play MOST is that you must buy them 24 hours in advance.
We travel to Florence often and Eurostar AMICA tickets are 28.90 Euros. Standard tickets are 36.10 Euros. The good news is if you know when you're going, you can buy these tickets at any train station - even at a kiosk. If you use the kiosk, press the British Flag, top row in the center, and all instructons will be in English! It will print ONE ticket for four people.Eurostar tickets have assigned seating and do not need to be validated - Just jump on and find your seats!
AMICA tickets are not available on some smaller or regional routes and the system defaults to the standard ticket.
Eurostar trains from Florence take about 1:38 hrs to make the trip to Rome Termini. Good Luck!
Thank you all again for your wonderful advice, how did people travel before the advent of such great sharing sites ??...so my train tickets are the last thing I need to do....I was thinking of purchasing them on line, before we go, I know I won't be able to take advantage of any of the fare savings, but I guess I was thinking that somehow having the train tickets would put me on a schedule as we are trying to see Rome, Venice, Florence and a side trip to San Gimignano in 9 days....
I know that's a bit rushed, but that's all the time we have.......
Terry
THanks, Terry. Your question has answeed most of my similar queries. The Amica and family discounts seem to be the same. Do I get a 50 % off for my 9 yr daughter also on the Amica discount ? We are a family of 2 adults and a 9 year daughter. Thanks in advance.
HI,
we just got back and just remember when taking the trains, to validate your ticket (s), there is a yellow box on the platforms that you slip your ticket into and it stamps the date on it....we saw someone receive a fine that had not validated their ticket, but about the Amica question....I believe the answer is yes, that you will receive a discount if your child is under 12, our children are 19 and 16, so I did not try for the discount, but just to double check I would look on the trenitalia website.....as I remember they did explain the Amica fare.
Have fun
Terry
Hi Terry / Ron,
Are the Amica / family fares avl on the Florence - Pisa route as well or are they for ES only ?
Thanks
Hmmmm, I'm honestly not sure, did you look at the trenitalia website ? I will forward you, let me find it, the 800 number that is here in the states for trenitalia, not sure if that will help you, but the folks at Rick Steves forwarded it to me when I had a question about schedules and payments........
"Here is the information that we have on our website regarding purchasing
tickets from Trenitalia. You can also call this company in Los Angeles
as they are a "help desk" of sort for Trenitalia as well. Discover Italy
800-320-1710"
I hope this helps.
