Florence to Venice Rail

I'm not having any success in booking tickets online with either trenitalia or italotreno. I've never used italiarail before. Ticket prices are good but am wondering if I can print tickets directly? I saw something about rail passes and European tickets being mailed. Since I only have 12 days before I leave I don't want to chance regular mail. Anyone knwo for sure?

Did you register on the Trenitalia site? Did you notify your credit card provider that you would be making an international purchase? Trenitalia will send you an e-mail with a confirmation code. Print the note and take it with you. It will serve as your ticket.

If you leave in 12 days, chances are all discounted tickets are sold out. If all you have left is full fare prices (called "BASE") then you might as well purchase the tickets on the spot at the station and not bother with pre-purchasing online. There are so many trains from Florence to Venice that they never run out of seats, especially off season.
The website is called www.trenitalia.com, in case you absolutely want to purchase online. You need to register first and notify your credit card, because credit cards often block international transactions over the internet for fear of fraud.

Thanks for the replies. I received a notice from my credit card that they were denying the charge based on a fraud alert. I've got that taken care of and can now book. At this point, there are still some discounted seats available so I'll get them booked now. Thanks again.

Note that when registering with Trenitalia, they will first send you a temporary password. You must not delay in signing on to change this to a permanent password of your choice. Second, also when registering, the USA is listed as Stati, Uniti d'America.

Teena, At this late date, the discounted seats will likely be in the "Economy" class rather than "Super Economy". In any case, a discount is always nice. One important point to note is that when booking tickets on the "premium" trains such as the Freccia trains from Florence to Venice, the tickets will be specific to a particular train, date and departure time. You can ONLY use the train specified on your ticket. If you board any other train, you'll be subject to hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot! Cheers!

Warning: our experience with Trenitalia With the assistance of an Italian guide, when in San Marghirita, Italy I thought I purchased a Trenitalia train ticket from Florence to Venice for Sunday September 29, 2013. The ticket agent appeared to have some difficulty with her computer and was having a hard time printing out two adjacent seats. Most of the conversation was between her and my Italian guide in Italian. At some point I know I heard him say in Italian Sunday, but I also looked on my calendar to confirm the date. I may have made a mistake. I paid 90 euros for two tickets for the one way trip. On the Sunday train from Florence to Venice two people were already in our seats, but plenty of room so took two empty seats. Conductor comes by to see tickets: ours were for 28.09 or the prior day!! So in checking the seats--coach number etc I missed the date mistake, but plenty of seats so I thought no big deal. Wrong--he demanded we buy two more seats and to add insult to injury added an additional 50 euro each. Hence we paid a total of 280 euros instead of 90 euros.
I just tried going on the Trentitalia web cite to complain and to try to resolve and could not sign on as every country but the USA is an option. I am sure I contributed to the mistake, but am very disappointed in the way the Trenitalia ticket checker responded. We had a ticket--there was room--we obviously had not used it the day before and now I can't get on the cite. Note a later ticket checker shrugged when I tried to explain the problem, When asked if there was anyone else I could talk with they both said no.

martin, there was a communication problem when you bought your ticket, for sure. You should have checked the date and time of your ticket immediately after getting the physical tickets. The place and time to dispute a wrong issuance of travel ticket (air, train, ferry) due to oral misunderstandings is immediately after getting them. Now there is something else: just because a train has empty seats, doesn't mean you can use your expired ticket, in the same way you cannot appear at an airport next day after your scheduled ticket and expect to be accommodated because "there are empty seats on the plane". I don't know any rail company what would let you travel for free because you didn't check the ticket you got from a booth operator and appeared one day later than the written date on the station.
