We will be in Florence for a few days and want to go to Lucerne. What is the best way to get there, and which tours should we take while there...Burgenstock is a must see. We plan to either fly back to the US from Paris or Zurich.
Judith, The easiest and quickest way to get from Florence to Lucerne is by train. For example, there's a train departing Firenze SMN at 08:55, arriving Lucerne at 14:41 (time 5H:46M, 2 changes at Milano Centrale and Arth-Goldau, reservations compulsory on the first two legs). There are numerous other trains with varying travel times and other details. It's difficult to suggest tours in Lucerne without having some idea on your interests. You could start with the Walking tour that's offered at the T.I. (in the rail station as I recall). Exploring on your own is also good. Don't miss the famous "Lion of Lucerne". I also really enjoyed the Museum of Transport. Check the Switzerland Guidebook for other suggestions. Happy travels!
I agree with Ken. Take the train. The best site for detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe is the German Rail site. The route Ken gave you appears on that site. Pick the departure time you want and note where and when you will need to make connections. To get the best discount fares, book each leg separately. Book Florence to Milan on trenitalia.com to get a discount fare (if still available for your travel date). Book Milan to Arth-Goldau on trenitalia.com to get a Smart fare (if still available for your travel date). Buy your tickets from Arth-Goldau to Lucerne when you get to Arth-Goldau. Trains run three times/hour and there is no discount for advance purchase.
Thanks Guys! That is exactly the information that I was seeking! It's a bit confusing and I thought that point to point would be my best bet. I am used to booking and traveling "air" (Retired Northwest Airlines Agent)
Many thanks!
