What is the best way to get from Florence to Ljubljana? I have heard you have to take a train to Venice and then a bus from Venice to Ljubljana, is this correct? And if so what are the best bus companies to use?

Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find schedules. The Bahn does show some connections using an Austrian Rail bus from Venice to Villach, but there are also all-rail connections, albeit with more changes, but slightly faster.

You can find the schedules and buy tickets (from Venice to Ljubljana) on Austrian Rail, www.oebb.at.

Take a bus. Florentiabus has a daily bus which departs from the Sita station in Florence at 12:15 and arrives in Ljubljana at 20:20. Eight hours, no changes. http://www.florentiabus.it/orari-firenze-sofia.asp Or train to Mestre, then a bus from Mestre:
