Florence to Frankfurt - Train or Ryan Air?

My husband and I are traveling from Florence to Frankfurt. Train travel is $625 for 2 seats in second class. Do the fares flucuate on certain days like typical US Airlines? Is this a pretty typical fare? Ryan Air is $10 for 2 seats from Pisa to Frankfurt! Could this be true? Is this safe? Train travel will afford the best views but seriously, why spend $600 when I can fly for $10! Appreciate your viewpoint. Thanks!

It's true and it's safe. I flew Pisa to Frankfurt via Ryanair not long ago. Great deal. But you'll fly to Frankfurt Hahn, which is more than an hour from Frankfurt. Hahn is in the Hunsrück region just south of the Mosel River; you can catch buses to Frankfurt, Mainz, Heidelberg, Trier, Koblenz, Cochem, and Cologne from there. But there is no train service.

First, you need to read the RyanAir website more carefully. RyanAir does not fly to Frankfurt; it flies to "Frankfurt Hahn". Hahn is a town a hundred miles from Frankfurt, a town closer to Luxembourg than to Frankfurt. It takes two hours by bus to get to Frankfurt. Second, where did you get $625 from Florence to Frankfurt? If you purchase rail ticket from the Bahn, online, far enough in advance, like you have to do on RyanAir anyway to get the low fares, Milan or Bologna to Frankfurt are as low as €43,50 ($60) per person. It's not going to cost that much more for Italian Rail tickets from Florence to Milan or Bologna

The bus ride from Frankfurt Hahn to Frankfurt is only 1.5 hours and the bus costs 12 euro per person. We have used Ryan Air a couple of times and have zero complaints. One just has to read the website well and pay attention to all the fees. Size and weight of carry-on, and when they say one bag, they mean one bag, boarding pass printed up ahead of time, be on time, and stuff like that. Yes, Ryan Air is safe.

Flew Paris to Venice on RyanAir, super simple and super cheap. Downsides, are the bus ride to the far reaching airports and the fact you get packed in like cattle :) I would fly it again though if you needed to make a jump like this.

Thanks! I realize that Ryan Air doesn't fly direct into Frankfurt and was aware of the bus ride.
Lee, I was buying rail tickets through Rail Europe on line. Is there another option?

" I was buying rail tickets through Rail Europe on line. Is there another option?" Rail Europe is absolutely the worst place to get rail tickets. Even though Rail Europe is owned by French Rail, and probably gets their tickets from SNCF, they charge more than the counter price in France. The German Rail website offers some outstanding prices for advance purchase online from their websites. As long as it starts with one train connection beginning in Italy and ending in Germany and any number of additional connections in Germany, it's one fare, Europa-Spezial, starting at €39. Actually, Jo, according to the Hahn airport website, it takes 1½ hr from Hahn to FRA, but most people want to go Frankfurt, which takes 1¾ hr. In most cases, with RyanAir, you'll pay a €5 administration fee and, unless you pack really light like I do, another €15 for a checked baggage fee (carryon allowance, one pc, max 22#). And, notice, this, including fare, is all in Euro (@$1.37), not USD.

Susan, the preceding remarks are true, but I like train travel and have used my eurrail pass every time I have gone to Europe. I also like seeing the sights along the way. I have gone from Frankfurt to Florence and then Arezzo, where my cousin lives and most of the time it has gone through Basel, Switzerland. One time, the train was departing later in the day, so I was able to look around Basel. Then one time I took an overnight train from Freiburg Germany to Florence and arrived at around 700am and looked around and then went on to Arezzo. Of course, for me the eurrail pass was less expensive since I was going from Germany, to Belgium, to France, to Luxembourg, to Switzerland, to Italy , to Austria and back to Germany in about 21 days. Lately, I have gone for a longer time. That the only drawback I have seen, is that usually, depending on where you are going, it is sometimes a little restrictive on where you can go, if no train to a particular town that doesn't have rail service. Of course, you can always take a bus. Take car, and have a great trip.
