2 of us are travelling by train from florence to barcelona this september. What is the travel time, assuming no stops. Any opinions on stopping in Nice along the way?

The Trenitalia website shows one train leaving at 16:46 with a train change to a night train in Torino at 21:00. The journey is 16hrs 15min.
Note, however, that you can take a train from Florence to Nice Ville. This is an 8hr. journey and about 8 trains a day depart Florence for Nice. Expect up to 3 train changes at Pisa, Genoa or Ventimilla.
If you want to get off at Nice on any of the journeys, you will need two tickets - one from Florence to Nice and one from Nice to Barcelona.
If you haven't purchased any train tickets or passes yet, you might look into flying a cheap airline to Barcelona from Florence, Milan or Pisa. I see Sept. fares on Vueling from Milan Malpensa to Barcelona from as low as 36euro depending on the date.
