Flights within Europe-- (out of Lisbon, out of Madrid)

Hi all. Can you share what we can expect for our two flights within Europe? Does anyone know about flying out of these two airports? We have two separate flights (Lisbon - Madrid) and (Madrid - Rome) NOTE--these flights aren't on the same day. There will be 4 days in between each. Specifically looking for answers to these questions please:

  1. Approximate time we should plan to arrive before flight.
  2. Do we go through immigration/customs? (We'll have been in Lisbon for 4 days prior to flying out.)
  3. What to expect in general for a flight from Lisbon (Tap Portugal) and from Rome?
  4. Anything else that might be helpful for first-timers?

Thank you in advance!

Just to add that we will not be checking any baggage. Carry-ons only.

Think of it as just like a domestic flight at home--check in online so you have your boarding pass if possible, arrive about two hours early.
Be sure you have your baggage allowance straight--that is the only thing I would concern myself with. Otherwise, just follow instructions and you'll be all set.

Thank you! That helps ease my mind some. I'm not sure what I was expecting at the airports, but it seems a bit intimidating.

Nah, you'll be fine--some things are the same the world over (including the misery of the airport!). I find I have to pay close attention to make sure I hear announcements due to pronunciation differences, but otherwise it's about the same. Just watch the others at your gate, as there might be a passport check as you board, things like that.

Just like any US domestic flight. Same as NOrleans to Chicago. Security check is about the same. Just be sure you met the airline requirements for carry on luggage.

What airlines are you flying? Just like anywhere, that makes a big difference.

But for intra-Schengen flights, no, there is no immigration or customs, at least with Spain, Italy, and Portugal. You certainly do need to go through security, you will need an ID, which only your passport suffices. Many will say it is similar to a domestic flight in the US.

Look at the airline as to when they close check-in, or any other deadlines.

I am a bit leary when you say you will ony carry-on, that is probably your biggest risk, hence, what airline you might be flying.

Last year in Sept we flew, Porto to Madrid then on to London on Iberia Air. Because of the smaller size planes the airline have limited overhead space. When we checked in they placed a white tag on our carryons, While we were waiting in the boarding area. When I quizzed them about why they told me because when they run out of tags the gate staff will take ones without tags and gate check them.
My point here is to be prepared. Have your necessary items in your personal bags. In 10 European trips we have never had a problem with bags even when they were gate checked. Enjoy your journey.

Thanks for the info all! I'll go in with the idea that it's similar to our domestic flights with timing, gates, security BUT padding in extra time and consideration for the fact that it'll be all new for us.

As for our carry-ons--I have made sure our bags fit within the required measurements and weights allowed. I don't want any surprises that I can avoid. I was shocked to find that even the personal item has a weight limit! I've also made sure to book the ticket that allows a personal item AND a carry-on as I noticed that not all did.

DonP--my! I'm so glad you noted this for me as I will be prepared now just in the event we have to check the carry-on. I hadn't even thought of that scenario. Thank you!

Paul--thanks for the notes about them being Intra-Schengen flights-=-hadn't thought of that fact. We'll be flying Tap Portugal first and then ITA for the second flight, if that makes any difference.
