Flights: what's a good price?

Long time lurker, here :).

DH,DD and I are finally going to Paris this September. I've been watching the fares since LAST Sept, and lately the prices have dropped.

We're flying from Cleveland to Paris, or Akron/Canton to Paris, flight duration somewhat more important than price since DD will have just turned 3 and I'll pay a reasonable amount more for a shorter flight.

Anyway, I check the sites daily and get fare alerts and recently the prices have dropped. From CLE to CDG through Pearson is $774 a person RT, just under 10 hours on the way there and 12 hours and some on the way back. Is this a good price?

Thanks in advance! I do not post much, but I love reading the helpline- it has aided me while planning our trip!

I think that's a fair price. I just booked airfare leaving ORD arriving AMS and returning MUC arriving ORD for around 781.00 per person for this September. I used Kayak.com and Yapta to trak flights. Good Luck.

I have had a fare alert from ATL to CDG for about a year. I would say that's probably as low as I have seen for my route. I think that anything under $800 I would consider a deal and buy.

(But if I could predict airfares I would use that talent to predict the winning lottery tickets and just buy First Class tickets from now on :) )

I cant help you out with where you are leaving from, but you might try priceline.com and place your best bid and see what you can get.We are heading to Germany in 2 weeks, and have watched flights with Priceline for months! Husband was putting in offers but was always rejected. Finally we decided to leave from Chicago instead to save alittle $ and our destination is to Frankfurt when the fares dropped (only ONCE) to $758.. we bid at 650. per ticket, but they offered 675. so we booked! Last year same time we only paid $444.per ticket...prices are definately jumping!

Now, with priceline, are you obligated to buy if you name a price and all that jazz?

With priceline if you do the name your own price it requires you to give them a credit card before they proceed to step 2, telling you what you got. At that point you are STUCK, you have what they gave you.

Risk is too high for me :)

I think with Priceline you give up control over the timing of the flights.

With a 3-year-old I would put a premium on having control over that, so as not to get stuck with wierd flight times.

When my kids were little we did much better with evening departures for overnight flights.

I see on Kayak that most of the less expensive flights between CLE and Paris leave late morning or very early afternoon, and get you into Paris before 8:00 am their time. Which means you will go to your hotel and probably not be able to check in for hours. Also, you will be flying during most of what will be your daughter's day, when she is not going to be happy confined to an airplane seat when it is time she would normally be up running and playing.

These flights are all listed at $846 right now. Scrolling down on Kayak, you'll find a United flight combo for $848 that leaves CLE at 5:00 pm,---a much better time, as it is closer to bedtime. And the arrival time---9:25 am---is also better. By the time you get through customs and immigration and transfer to you hotel, you hopefully will not have long to wait before you can check in.

Just some things to think about.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

I've been following prices on Kayak, mostly. However, I often check the prices (not connecting through Kayak) and the pricing is different. The flight I'm looking at is at travelocity, leaves at 6pm, arrives at 9:40 am.

Also, we're staying in an apartment, since the thought of a smallish Parisian hotel with a three year old sounded hellish. Not to mention, so many disallow eating in rooms. How else does one keep a kid happy before it's time to go out for breakfast?

Anyway, the husband and I have discussed the pricing and I think we're going to go with the $774 flight, as the price and time of day and duration makes us happy.

Thank you for all your help!

Have a great time on your trip. I think you've made a smart move on getting an apartment. Having a kitchen when you have a little one helps a lot, especially if she's really cranky around dinnertime and the thought of eating out isn't very pleasant. Plus, it'll give you room to spread out so you and the hubby can put her to bed and then open up a nice bottle of French wine. Enjoy!
