Flights to Sicily- what company should I use?

Hello! Has anyone had any experience with flying from Rome to Sicily and back? I am looking for a regional flight brand that has a good flight reputation. And how far in advance should I book? Thank you so much!

We flew ITA Airways from Rome to Palermo in December 2024. It was fast and efficient. We did not return to Rome but flew from Palermo to Paris via TRANSAVIA. We probably booked @ six months in advance, but that's likely because I like to have everything arranged way ahead of time.

I have flown Ryanair, Rome to Palermo, as well as from Catania to Naples. I will be using them again, from Malta to Catania this Spring.

I also have flown Ryanair at least a dozen times prior, in various countries, never a problem.

My advice with them? Just pay to check your bag, it eliminates any worries and will still be cheaper in total than any other airline. If available, I purchase the "Plus" package, that allows a 20 kilo checked bag, a personal item on board, at airport check-in, and a reserved seat. Everything you need.

With any European airline, read the restrictions and requirements closely. All will have limited baggage allowances, that they do check, as well as other limitations you may not be used to flying US based airlines.

We flew Ryan air to and from Rome and Sicily. We paid to bring a carry on board as I did not want to check a bag. I chose Ryan air over ITA which was the other option because of that option with Ryan air.

My bag was standard US carry on which is not European sized carry on.
