Flights to/in Scandinavia

We are planning a 12 day visit to Scandinavia in early September 2014, followed by an additional 15 days. We are flexible regarding the city where we arrive (Stockholm, Oslo or Copenhagen). We will have 2 days in one of these cities before flying to Kirkenes to board a Hurtigruten ship for a 6 day voyage south ending in Bergen. We will then have four additional days before we have to be in Warnemünde for a repositioning cruise that ends at Genoa.

What are the most convenient/budget airlines flying from one of the three cities noted to/from Kirkenes? Also, we’re planning on flying from Italy to one of the three cities in Scandinavia for the trip back to the US (the plan is to fly Iceland Air to/from the US; they don’t fly to Kirkenes and their flights to/from Italy are limited in September).

We're thinking it may be best to arrive in Stockholm for two days before flying to Kirkenes (to board the
Hurtigruten ship south to Bergen). Upon on our arrival in Bergen, we'll spend a day there, and then take the train to Oslo for two days, then the train/ferry to Copenhagen for two days.
Would a different itinerary have any advantage(s) over the one I describe?

Two search sites find most of the low-cost European airlines: www.skyscanner.com ,
www.whichbudget.com
Norwegian has become the third-biggest budget airline in Europe behind Ryanair and easyJet http://www.norwegian.com/en/
As for your return home, Icelandair flies daily from Milan to the United States in September. You might find decent rail connections from Genoa, saving the return to Scandinavia. Or there might be other Italian cities offering an alternative. In any case, the fares on Icelandair look less of a bargain when you consider the limited departure cities, which will cost you both extra transportation from Genoa and probably an extra night in a hotel to be sure of catching the flight. On the plus side, Icelandair does offer that intriguing stopover in the island nation.

Flying to Kirkenes, you must fly from Oslo, Wideroe, Norwegian, and SAS are your options. Prices are in the $100+ range.
From Chicago, SAS has one flight to Stockholm and one flight to Copenhagen every day and pretty good prices, especially if you can catch a sale, which they do occasionally. We used them for a RT to Venice a few years ago, so Italy is no problem.

SAS isn't a budget airline, but their service has impressed me everytime I use them. And with the state of the airline industry today, that's a rare complement.

Last year SAS had offered some reasonably priced hops within Scandinavia, if you flew them to Scandinavia. It may be worth checking out.

Jon,

I used skyscanner and Kayak to find my flights when i was in the Scandinavian countries last Sept. All of the flights i ended up using were from Norwegian Air since they had the 1. Best flight departures/arrivals times to where i wanted to go to/from 2. cost.

To get to Europe, i like no stop flights and so far the only game in town is Delta/KLM. On my first trip, i did the cheap multi leg flight to save $$, but in the end,it cost me more time, so im going for the direct route for now. I would use anyone that has the direct flights and $. If the direct get too expensive, then i start adding stops in.

your mileage may vary.

Happy trails.

Wikipedia says:
Three airlines serve the (Kirkenes) airport with scheduled flights. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Norwegian Air Shuttle both operate a daily flight to Oslo, with SAS operating two services per day during summer;[30] both airlines use the Boeing 737.[24] Widerøe flies to various regional airports in Finnmark and Troms, and uses Kirkenes as a hub to feed regional passengers to Oslo flights.

I would say Oslo would be the place to go to.

As to how to get to Warnemünde: The closest airport is Rostock. It's served by a few airlines which all don't fly there every day. Your best bet is a connecting flight via Cologne on Germanwings.com. They are a low cost carrier.

The port of Warnemünde has got a train station which is served by a shuttle train from Rostock central train station (Hbf). The shuttle (S-Bahn) journey is 30 minutes. There are direct trains to Rostock from Berlin and Hamburg with Hamburg being particular easy: Hamburg airport to Hamburg Hbf: 30 minutes S-Bahn. Hamburg Hbf to Rostock Hbf: 90 minutes to two hours direct train ride.
