I was hoping to find an inexpensive non stop flight to Marseille (destination Avignon) from Rome. The cheapest flight I could find was almost $700.00 each. Is this my only choice?

Use the www.skyscanner.net search engine. Be aware that prices tend to rise closer to your departure. Also be aware that European discount airlines tag many more charges, such as for checked baggage fees.

You didn't give your travel date - which makes a difference. Assume you're talking a one way ticket, although you didn't say that either. Out of the hat I picked a date of April 26. British Air has numerous flights under $300 (one way) from Rome to Marseille, but they all involve a long stopover in London. Alitalia has a more direct flight via Paris at $363 one way, leave Rome at 1705 and arrive Marseille at 2240. I used momondo.com - they came up with 12 itineraries under $700.
