I am trying to book a round-trip flight from Florence to Palermo. The tickets are extremely expensive, and only Alitalia seems to offer this. If we fly from Rome to Palermo and then return to Florence, it is a little cheaper, but not much. I have had no luck with smaller airlines or Web sites such as kayak.com. I would appreciate any suggestions. We are traveling in May and will spend six nights in Palermo. Thank you.

There is another option that's much cheaper, but you will have to fly into Sicily's other major airport, Catania. Still using kayak.com for a May flight, it shows $329 r/t FLR - Palermo and only $139 r/t to Catania. Even cheaper from Pisa; $94 on Air One (part of Alitalia).
The downside with this choice is the length of time it takes to get from Catinia to Palermo, but you'd save a lot of $$.
