Friends in Rome commented that our flight was exceptionally long from Wash DC. to Rome - 10 hours. Flight from Rome back to DC is 8 hours. Our original departure airport is SFO .
Both aircraft are Boeing 777-200ER. Why 2hours longer going? Just curious.
From Washington to Rome non stop is probably on United. My check of the schedule shows almost 9 hours to Rome and almost 10 hours for the return.
Going eastbound to Rome you are flying with the upper level winds (Jet Stream) so you have a tail wind and can go faster. On the return westbound you are flying into the jet stream winds and thus go slower. At least that is what I have always been told.
