flight to LUX or FRA

We've signed up next summer for Rick's G.A.S. tour which begins in Trier. Do any of you have advice on whether it's better to fly in to Frankfurt or Luxembourg City? Seems like a lot of the flights even stop over in Frankfurt on the way to Luxembourg, so may even arrive in a similar amount of time. Thanks for your help!

I cannot say it is better, but Luxembourg is much closer to Trier than Frankfurt is, and flights seem to be cheaper. We looked first at Frankfurt for tickets from Atlanta next spring but bought for LUX instead because they were about $200 less per ticket. Plus, I like smaller airports, and Frankfurt's is one of the largest in Europe. I would also expect the train from Luxembourg to Trier to be cheaper and quicker than from Frankfurt.

I did London-Trier via Luxembourg Airport this Easter. Don't bother with the direct shuttle bus from Luxembourg Airport to Trier that's advertised online - I was quoted a ridiculous price for it. There are frequent buses from the airport to the railway station and trains are about every hour. The only caution I would give is that the bus is a local city bus that stops many times, not an express, so leave plenty of time if you book tickets in advance, or get a cab. The walk-up train fare isn't too pricey, so I wouldn't book in advance and tie yourself to a specific train.

We took the train from Luxembourg City to Trier. I believe it was an hour or less........We spent 4 nights in Trier as it was a rest stop for us during our 8 week trip........We considered a 2 hour boat cruise up and down the Moselle, Rheinisches Landemuseum (one of the best museums we visited in Europe)and Porta Nigra as the hi-lites of the city....... We also took a bus trip in and around Trier which was very interesting...................http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/germany/trier.htm ..............It is definitely worth spending 2 full days there prior to the start of the tour.

Hi Gail - I just returned from the GAS tour. I flew in to Luxembourg and took the shuttle to the hotel. The airport is new, small (1 luggage carousel). The flight was early and I was surprised that the driver was there waiting for me. The trip to the hotel took about 45 minutes. The shuttle was a little expensive but I thought it was worth it. Here's the website and e-mail address if you want to inquire: http://www.airportliner-trier.de/en/index.php e-mail [INVALID] [email protected] Some of my tour-mates flew in to Frankfurt and took the train (I think it was 3 hours and involved 2 trains). I just didn't want to mess around after a long travel day. I really enjoyed the GAS tour and I'm sure that you will too. Happy planning!
