flight to amsterdam

i've been 'out of the loop' for a while, but recently started planning our summer vacation for this year. my husband wants to return to amsterdam having loved it on our short visit last year. i'm seeing flight prices from JFK to amsterdam up around $1,000, and flights to london around $800. the thought was to fly jfk to reyjkavik to amsterdam ($1000) OR jfk to london to amsterdam (via train, $800 plus train fare). what are the thoughts on those prices? i fully realize that no one can accurately answer the question 'should i book now or wait', but i still would like some input due to my afore mentioned 'out of the loop-ness' oh, and for comparison purposes, this is for travel in july/august (the only time we can travel, alas!) (and yes, for those of you who remember me, i'm the one who had a miserable time in paris last year. and yes, we are going back to europe. go figure!)

$1000 is about what you should expect to pay during the summer months. Taking the train from London to Amsterdam is an option, but in order to get the lowest Chunnel train fares, you have to commit to a specific departure. So there is a risk if your plane is delayed out of NYC. IMO the savings are nominal, not worth the hassle of heading into central London to catch the train. I would bite the bullet and take the non-stop flight to Schipol.

ok. that all makes sense. i just needed someone to say 'yes that's a reasonable price'. perhaps i'll blow my husband's mind and book the flight today. he wanted to do the iceland stopover anyway, which is the $1000 amsterdam option. thanks!!!
