My family and I won a trip to visit Loch Ness. We've never traveled abroad and one of us suffers from MS. I've heard to avoid Heathrow because of the crowds. Can anyone recommend a flight into Edinborough directly from another U.S. city closer to Miami( other than Kennedy or Newark). Because of the disability involved the less walking and running to catch connecting flights the better. I'd appreciate any advice in the planning of this trip. The idea of traveling to Scotland with 4 people at least in this stage is very daunting.
Am not sure about flights from Florida although I do know that Virgin flies into bnoth Miami and Orlando, although I believe they are both to/from Heathrow. Check their web site...www.virgin-atlantic.co.uk
Also for anyone with any kind of a disability, free wheelchair service is available at all airport terminals...known as Special Assistance. You just have to request it in advance and keep rechecking that it;s in the computer as you go along. I used to travel with my Mother who had Parkinson's and always got a wheelchair. It was very easy. We always tipped the person who pushed though! You also get Oriority Boarding on planes. So do some research on airlines.
I highly recommend Virgin though.

There are direct flights to Edinburgh from Newark (year-round), JFK (summer) and Altanta (summer). To be honest, I think Newark would be the best place to transfer, as it's a newish terminal with easy access and you could have a wheelchair or courtesy vehicle between gates. Just make sure to leave plenty of time between flights (2-3 hours).
The one thing to consider is that returning the US, you will have to go through immigration & customs in your first US city, which means collecting luggage and re-checking it - a bit of a hassle. That can be avoided by getting a flight via a European airport - Schipol in Amsterdam is excellent for transfers.
A note of caution - there are MAJOR roadworks in Edinburgh now and the parking regulations are STRICTLY enforced, so consider when/if you rent a car. Most buses are accessible, so it's often best to rent a car at the airport on your way out of the city.

Off topic but a piece of advice. Posting your e-mail address on a public forum is one way to direct a lot of spam to your e-mail inbox. And using your work e-mail address doesn't look so good, especially when it's a public agency.
