Flight cost - AUS-FCO

For the past month, I've been watching Lufthansa flights from Texas through IAD to fly to Rome with fares ranging from $1175 to $1275 in October. I know there is not right time to purchase, but is this ballpark probably as good as it gets? The $1175 lasted only a couple of days and then it popped back up. For that price LH lets us connect through DC the night before, which makes it really nice for the 4 of us traveling together. It's also an open-jaw ticket out of Florence coming back. Thanks for your thoughts/experience.

I don't know about the price, but I like that you're also thinking of other factors. I agree that having a good itinerary for your needs is worth paying a bit more for. (I've seen people choose miserable itineraries or connections to save $100, which I think is a great example of the term "false economy").

Turkish has some special going on from Houston (IAH) The route is: IAH>IST>FCO They want about $850 in October.
However you need to go to Houston first. That's close to 3 hr drive from Austin, I think.

$1150 range is what we are seeing for the fall. If you have a certain vacation schedule or event you want to see in Italy, you might as well bite now. If you are flexible, you can wait a little longer for a fall sale to come along. It happens.

I think that looks like a really good fare. I am helping coordinate a fall trip to Italy for a group of friends, and few have found fares to match the ones you found. I'd grab it!

Thank you all for your feedback. I guess there's always the dream of below $1000 fares that fit all of dates, routing parameters I have!
