flight connection

I need to book a flight Nantes-JFK for the week before Christmas. Time to make the connection in Amsterdam 1:25 hr or in Paris 1:45hr.
1:25 seems short, but I read that AMS is better organized and has fast track for passports if necessary (supposedly there is a fast track line usually reserved for Elite or Business Class that you can use when your flight is boarding). Plus it seems handluggage is checked at the gate, they will hardly close the doors if people are still being checked right there.. Or is Paris CDG better, with an added 20 minutes to make the connection? I read that Paris is pretty chaotic and might even involve a change of terminal by bus? Any advice?

Katja, i use AMS as my hub. I havent used all of the gates/terminals, but the ones i use do do the screening at the gate so the lines are only for passengers. i wish they did that at PDX. you can go to the web sites of each airport and look at the maps/layout of the airport to get an idea on how much walking/running you will need to do. if youre lucky, your tickets should have info as to the gate/terminals you wlll arrive/depart from. sometimes the airport web sites will list "internaional" flight terminals/gates too. if it was me, id rather do AMS then CDG. but thats just me. i dont know of ANY airline that will close the door if people are being run thru security. at AMS they do pull you aside and ask quesitons about your luggage. happy trails.

What time would the CDG-JFK flight be? There is a 6:05 TGV direct to CDG arriving at 9:11. AirFrance has flights at 8:20, 10:35, 2:10 p, 4:35 p, 7:10 p.
There is also 10:05 TGV arriving 1:11 p.

I go to Europe three times a year. I will make almost any compromise to stay out of chucky-d in paris. I also happen to like Amsterdam and have made 1 hour connections there but I prefer a full 2 hours on any overseas connection.

I use both airports quite a bit. The connection will work easily at either one. I'd use the one that would make the entire trip the quickest. If they were the same, I'd use Schiphol since I prefer their coffee places.

That does it! Next time I have to make a connection at CDG, I want to take Ed along. (I almost missed the point about Amsterdam "coffee places." Good one, Ed!) Otherwise, I would go with nearly any other airport in Western Europe to avoid CDG. In the case of AMS, there is no contest. It is one of the most efficient airports I know of; CDG is anything but efficient. The French are to efficiency what the Dutch are to cooking.

after much research I decided that 1:25 hrs in AMS or 1:45 in CDG is too short if the first domestic flight has the slightest delay or the passport lines to get from Schengen into Non-Schengen are too long. This being the pre Christmas week I fear it will be more crazy than usual
Choices now are 3:25 layover in Paris or 5:50 in AMS. Is 3:25 doable in Paris, knowing the airport is badly organized and the passport lines long? I guess coming from a domestic flight and changing to an international US bound flight he'll have to take a bus to a different terminal and go through passport and security before getting to his gate. Heard horror stories about CDG....but nearly 6 hrs in AMS is crazy.....tending towards the 3:25 in CDG?

Yes, 3.25 hours should be enough time for CDG, even if there are crowds. With that amount of time, CDG will probably work out fine. Just check out the layout of the airport on the web ahead of time and be patient.

Youse guys are a bunch of wimps, especially the Roissy-knockers. Hell, I've got a thirty-five minute change next week at Bush with a terminal change and I ain't sweating it. And, I can't remember if it's part of that trip or the next one in the basket, I have a 1.2 at Paris and I haven't even checked to see if I'm staying in T2. And what else: if anybody thinks that I don't know where the coffee places are at any airport in the world, they need a really big prybar to get their head unstuck.
