Fiumicino-Civitavecchia

We'll be traveling from Rome's airport to Civitavecchia in a few weeks. I'd like to know what others who've made that trip have found is the best way to go. Taxi? Is there an easy train route (if so, specifics, please). Bus? Thanks much for your help.

Taxis would cost over €110. A combination of bus/train which takes just over an hour and a quarter would cost about €5. Here's a link for more info.

Since you asked for the best way, consider a private car service. Yes, it is expensive, but after a long flight, some jet lag, not being familiar with the area, there is nothing better than having your private driver meet you inside the terminal and whisk you to your destination. No fending off the unregistered, independent cabs, waiting in the regular taxi line, handling luggage on a bus / train, or just having a "lost" feeling. It is not the cheapest way, but it is definitely the best. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service --not a cab company. We always use them and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We usually send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance.

Straight train option is local FR train to Rome Trastevere, change to Regionale to Civitavecchia. Departures every 30 minutes and takes 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours. Cost 11 EUR per person.

How many in your group?

Taxi would be easiest. Pre-arranged private transfer if you have more than 3 people and a lot of luggage. Private transfer can be cheaper than a cab if you have a large group. Vehicles will take you right up to the ship.

Train would be cheap. May be crowded. I think you have to transfer in Termini, which may give you an interesting story to tell if you become a victim of crime. Also keep in mind you will have an up to 2 kilometer walk from train station to ship depending upon where it docks, unless you spring for the cost ot cab(s) at the station.

No, you transfer at Trastevere.

I've never been subject to crime in Termini Station. Sorry if you had bad luck once, but it's not fair to create fear in the naive.

The problem with the low-cost train route is that it backtracks away from Civitavecchia and then takes the (roughly) one hour train trip back there. One of the good things you can say about the auto trip is that the airport is closer to the cruise port than is downtown Rome, and the traffic won't involve the Rome rush-hour if your transatlantic flight arrives in the morning.

I would add that the train station in Civitavecchia is an annoyingly long walk from the cruise port, and then you have to take the proprietary port-shuttle bus to your ship. BTW, will your ship be boarding by that time? They would never accept you early because ships usually turn-around in a single daylight day. There are taxis to the port, and a local bus, but I don't think it's terribly frequent, and you have to figure out where to buy a ticket for it. We walked, and we'll never do that again. Hot, bumpy on the suitcase wheels, and confusing. (Very clean, safe, city, however.)

If you're thinking (the OP ... ) that the Rome cruise port is far and inconvenient, you are right! Travel Agents should be more assertive about this when selecting cruises. We've left out of there twice, and returned once. I will say that it was very convenient to rent a car in Civitavecchia and drive to Tuscany without passing near Rome.
