Fiumicino Airport to Civitavecchia

How do I find out what trains to take from the airport to the cruise port prior to my travels? I have read many horror stories of pickpockets and would like to be as educated as possible. Thank you so much for your help!

You take the Leonard Express from the airport to Termini in Rome and then the train to Civit.... About three trains an hour so you don't have to worry too much about the schedule. Depending on the train it will take about 45 mins to 1 15. Buy your tickets are the airport station. The train station is less than a half mile from the cruise port and you will be able to see your ship from the station. Another option is the local train from the airport and change trains at Trastevere to Civit.... Trastevere is one of the stops on the line to Rome but Leonard Express does not make any stops between the airport and Termini. RominRome.com has more detailed information.

Kelsey, Frank is "spot-on" in his descriptions. I know he's made the trip often by train. I'm not sure that pickpockets are a huge issue on these specific trains but it's certainly a target rich environment for a thief! You're right to be thinking ahead. To prepare yourself further, you might read these two articles, Pickpockets in Rome and Travel Preparations before heading to Rome. Of Frank's two options, I prefer the The FR1 Metropolitan train into the Roma Trastevere station, and then catching the train there out to Civitavecchia. It's cheaper, faster, and with the exception of the IC trains, the Regionale trains from Roma Termini all stop at the Trastevere station anyway - so you avoid some doubling back. The current fares, per person, for this route are €8 from the FCO Train Station to the The Roma Trastevere Trenitalia Rail Station and then €4.10 from Trastevere out to Civitavecchia. So €12.10 per person. That's actually cheaper than the current €14 fee just to ride the The Leonardo Express into Roma Termini! As Frank says, you could ride into Roma Termini and actually get a reserved seat on an IC train, but their schedules are far more limited. Generally the Regionale trains to Civitavecchia from Trastevere run about every 30 minutes - with another run per hour during peak periods .

You might also read these posts. Although they pertain somewhat to round-trip travelers, the pictures will give you a sense of the walk that Frank mentions from the train station to the port entry gates. It is quite flat and an easy walk. Just exit the train station, turn right and walk along the coast until you see the fort ( or the McDonald's!). The maps and photos in these posts may help you. Good Luck! Coming to Rome by train from Civitavecchia - just for the day! and Traveling from Rome to Civitavecchia by train

The trouble with stories about pickpockets etc. is that it is a single experienced multiplied many times. And sometimes a little extra is added. When reading travel boards it looks like everyone is having problems when in fact only few people may be having problems. A couple years ago a travel magazine carried an extensive articles on petty theft in Europe and cites an Interpol report that about 1 in 4 tourist have problems. Which means that 3 in 4 do not. We have spent nearly a year in Europe in some of the reported, great pickpockets capitols over the past 18 years with no problems other than two very minor encounters with "gypsies." In fact, I have never seen anyone else being robbed either. I am always puzzled by posters who claim to have had four or five attempts made on them, sew all kinds of thieves hanging around, etc. Often wonder if they have an active imagination or do I just not know what a pickpocket looks like. While I believe that pickpocket is and can be a problem, I think it is often over hyped on travel sites. Take reasonable precautions, be alert and you will be fine.

Thank you for that reply Frank. -Perhaps you are spying on me, as I have been reading about pickpockets for the past 2 hours!! I have successfully scared myself. :) This makes me feel SO much better and way more reassured. As a matter of fact, my mom just emailed me and said she made it safely to Civitavecchia, so I figure if she can do it, I'll be fine next week. Thank you again.
