Hi, we will be attending interzoo expo in Nuremberg (messezentrum) & already obtained a 3 day pass ticket & booked hotel at acom hotel, address Leipziger plate 22 Nuremberg. Please advise where should we land Frankfurt or Munich, as we could fly direct on BA london-Nuremberg but they only have 2 flights operated by airberlin which gets there very late we rather get to Nuremberg early, so we opted to connect in either Frankfurt or Munich, fly or take a train to nuremburg
please advise which city will work out better by train, if affordable & how do we get around. Thank you
Frankfurt would be a slightly longer ride, but you could catch a direct train from the airport station to Nürnberg. The total trip time would be shorter from the Munich airport , but it involves one transfer.
It really doesn't matter which city to fly to. Both from Frankfurt and from Munich you've got hourly excellent service to Nuremberg. Many airlines provide rail&fly tickets either as part of the air fare or at a small fee which is probably the cheapest way to get to Nuremberg. Then both Frankfurt and Munich each have one advantage over the other: From Frankfurt airport's long-distance train station you have direct ICE (bullet train) service to Nuremberg whereas from Munich airport you have to take a commuter train to the Central Train Station first (at least a 30 mins ride) before you can change on to your train to Nuremberg. However, Munich and Nuremberg are in the same state (Bavaria) so if you can't get a rail&fly ticket it's probably a bit cheaper to Nuremberg from Munich than from Frankfurt. Assuming that Lee will want to elaborate: Interzoo is from May 17 to 20. ;-)
I've just done a search on swoodoo.com from JNB to NUE out on May 16, return on May 20. I get a roundtrip fare of €790 on Lufthansa... via FRA directly to NUE airport. Turkish Airlines also fly JNB via Istanbul and then directly into NUE for €841...
I would first look for a flight or connecting flight that gets you into Nuernberg by air. If you can't fly into Nuernberg and decide to take a train to Nuernberg, it's a seven minute trip by U-Bahn (U2) from Nuernberg Hbf to Nordostbhf (Northeast U-Bahn station) and a three minute walk from there to your hotel. To find connections, use the German Rail (Bahn) website; pick the "radio button" for address and use the address from above. The Bahn website will show you public transit in Nuernberg to get you as close to the hotel as possible. The fastest way (about 2h45min) from one of the other airports to Nuernberg would be the ICE from FRA to Nuernberg Hbf. That would also be a very expensive way (€108 for two people). On the other hand, if you arrive early enough in Munich to catch the 9:41 bus from the airport to Freising, you can make the trip to the hotel in 3 hrs for €29 for both of you with a Bayern-Ticket. This involves a 18 min bus trip from the airport to the Freising Bahnhof, a 2 hr trip by Regional Express to Nuernberg, and the U-Bahn to near your hotel. There is also a 3 hr connection leaving the airport at 11:41. Between those two connections, other connections take longer, with another change of trains and don't get you to your hotel enough sooner to be worth the effort. The Bayern-Ticket requires no pre-purchase; you can purchase it from an automat on the platform that morning.
Thank you all for taking time out of your precious time to reply, I have decided to land in Munich from heathrow on BA landing 10h55 then proceed to freising as advised & take the train to nuremburg as check in at the hotel is 3pm I think that will be ideal. Thank you all once again, I will surely come to Germany to explore more after this interzoo expo. Any advise on how to tip, where to eat or what to do (nightlife) after attending the expo will be appreciated & one more thing are there any clothing outlets nearby. Ciaooo
