First class VS second class rail

We will be traveling around Eastern Europe (our 1st trip!) in June. Should we splurge and buy 1st class or will second class be sufficent? Really what are the big perks on the 1st class train? (We will only be riding by day)
Thanks!

You also might consider asking that question on the "to the East" forum.

In Germany, I would say that the benefits of 1st class are pure luxury, but in Eastern Europe, I can't say.

A good person to answer that question would be Arnold, since he has travel extensively in that area, but he is out of the country right now. You might send him a PM so he will see it when he returns, in case you posting is buried by then.

Our experience was that it was usually much less crowded in 1st class and therefore easier to board. Subsequently, the restrooms were always cleaner also. Of course the seats are a bit nicer and roomier. For trips of several hours, I would choose 1st class. It's usually not a huge $$$ difference like on the airplane.
