We are arriving at the Campo di Marte station via overnight train. I assume there are local trains that you can catch to Santa Maria Novella. Has anyone done this?

Yes....the Campo di Marte train station is a suburban stop to the east of downtown Florence. Simply get off the train, head into the news stand inside the small station, and purchase a one-Euro local transit ticket....they're good on the trains in the Florence area. Validate it in one of the machines trackside, and wait for the next commuter train to come along....they come thru, heading for SMN station, every few minutes. Be aware though....they don't stop for long!
