Ok, so now our trip is 2 months away. We have booked our 2 nights in Fussen Germany and are heading to the time share in St Martin Bei Lofer after that. My final question: where do we rent a car after heading to St Martin Bei Lofer? Should we train from Fussen to Salzburg and rent the car there or is there a car rental closer to St. Martin Bei Lofer, outside of Salzburg/Salzburg area? Thank you!
I googled the town, since I'd never heard of it. As it turns out, I've driven through there last winter. The bigger town of Lofer is quite small, really. Are you renting a car in Fuessen to get to St. Martin BL? It's just under an hour to Salzburg on the back roads, so it is much closer to get there than drive 3 hours back to Fuessen to get a car. It depends on where you're going after St. MBL, if it's Salzburg, then certainly rent the car there. If you'd like to head south, Saalfelden is a good sized town, lots of sports shops, larger grocery stores, etc. so I bet they would have a car rental place there. To clarify: 1. How are you getting from Fuessen to St. Martin BL? (I'm thinking car is the time saver here).
2. Where are you going after that you need a car? This'll give us a direction of travel so we can find the nearest big town.
We are starting our trip in Rome, for 3 nights., Then train to Venice, for 3 nights followed by train to Fuessen for 2 nights, finally train as close to timeshare as possible for one week with plans to visit Salzburg and Hallstat. We are flying home from Salzburg. Just want rental car location to be easy, no hassle since we have to check into timeshare by 4 pm coming from Fuessen.

Hi Kristin, What's the train route from Fuessen to Salzburg? I'd suggest going from Fuessen to Munich, get the car, and drive to St. Martin bei Lofer. To avoid drop off fee's, return the car in Freilassing, Germany, just outside of Salzburg. Fuessen to Munich should be about 2 hours and then Munich to St. Martin bei Lofer is about 2 a hour drive. If you left Fuessen fairly early, you should have no trouble. Plus renting in Germany is probably cheaper than renting in Austria. Be sure to get an IDP from AAA and an Austrian Vignette (toll sticker) for driving on highways in Austria. Buy the Vignette (about 8 Euro) at a gas station after leaving Munich and before entering Austria. Paul
We were planning train to Munich. Thank you!
Final, final question...I promise this time! Trying to get from Verona to Hohenschwangau in Germany. Which train schedule seems most reasonable and most scenic and WHY DON'T PRICES APPEAR??? Don't want to give my credit card information without prices!! We are equally worried about the 2-5 min. transfers along the way choosing the scenic route through Reutte. Is this doable for a family of five (teens and a 10 year old)? Would like to leave Verona around 9am. PLEASE HELP!
One reason why prices don't appear for Verona to Hohenschwangau is that Hohenschwangau does not have a rail station. You reach it by bus from Fuessen Bhf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or Reutte. The bus is not included on your ticket. To see the "ticket" price, put in Verona to Fuessen (via Munich) or Verona to Reutte. The additional fare for the bus is quite nominal, and you will pay it on the bus.
Ok. Do I use Trenitalia or Bahn from Verona to Fuessen? Fuessen (Fussen-either spelling) does not even come up on Trenitalia site.
Use the Bahn site. Trenitalia doesn't book the trains in Germany.
Reutte isn't scenic.
