anything i should know? what port? irish ferries vs stena? which company?easy to get to port form dublin?
We did the reverse 5 years ago, taking Irish Ferries from Holyhead to Dublin. http://www.irishferries.com/ie/routes-times-dublin-holyhead.asp We took the overnight ferry, leaving around 2:30AM and pulling into Dublin about 6AM. It was a large ship, complete with casinos, bars and a restaurant. The passengers included a lot of commuters who go back and forth between Wales and Ireland. And a few were noticeably drunk, but there was no trouble during the trip. Aside from that, we were pleased with the experience and the ride went without a hitch. Irish Ferries also has "swift" ships that make the crossing in about half the time. The port is a few miles from central Dublin, easy to get to by taxi. Not sure if there are shuttle buses going there. I don't know how Stena compares. We drove rental cars on our trip, so I can't speak from experience on the rail service. However, I think it's about a 4 hour train ride from Holyhead to London. Another option is to look into cheap flights Dublin-London (e.g., Ryanair).
See this page for a detailed description of routes, companies, timetables, and how to book.
I think it's about a 4 hour train ride from Holyhead to London. 3:40 with no changes, 4:05 or 4:15 with one change at Chester, 4:30 or more with 2 changes at Chester and Crewe. FWIW
I got a taste of what a "cruise" would be like when I took the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin. As described, it is a floating restaurant/casino/sitting room/shopping mall. I enjoyed being able to move around and visit the various areas of the ship. I think I was on Stena. A commuter train runs near the ship port and takes maybe 20 min. getting to Dublin. It was inexpensive, but don't know exactly how much as this was about 12 years ago. Check for more recent details.
My understanding from the stena website and the virgin website and one other--is that there are ferry/rail combined passes of about $55.
anybody have any problem with these?
