Ferry services in the western Mediterranean (passenger)

Any advice for finding schedules/routes for the Italian/French/Spanish coasts and associated islands? Passenger only - no car

I'd like to sort of "bum around" on ferries making my way generally between Naples and S. Spain. Stopping at various ports for a day or 2, much like one would do in the Greek Isles. I’m not really looking for anything like a “Cruise” just decent accommodations on a big boat.

I've checked Grimaldi Ferries and aferry.com.uk per RS' suggestions, but they seem rather limited in their routes. To put it simply, can’t a guy just jump on a boat from, say, Marseilles to Barcelona???

Ferry services are limited by two things: the popularity of destinations and the limits placed by countries as to which of their ports they will allow ferry traffic at. There are many more ferry services than Grimaldi but the routes are few in number. As a matter of fact, we think you CAN go from Marseilles to Barcelona!
