Have been reading about my options for travelling down to Palermo (4 adults) I have read take the train or fly etc. I will be in the Sorrento area mid July for 1 week than we need to get to Palermo. If anyone has done this travel before I would appreciate your opinion. I also read about doing the travel at night time?
From Naples to Palermo by boat it's a 12 hour journey and it costs a little over 50 euro. From Naples to Palermo by train it's over 9 hours and it costs a little over 50 euro (base price) unless you can secure a discounted ticket, in which case it could be less than 40 euro. From Naples to Palermo by air it's a short 45 min flight but prices may be high since only Alitalia flies non stop from Palermo from Naples at the moment and they take advantage of it. However starting in Spring, Volotea, a Spanish low cost, will start flying a non stop on that route, so it won't be that expensive then. I tested for April and May and Volotea charges as little as euro 19.99 one way on that route (but bag fees may be stiff on low cost). Air Italy flies from Naples to Catania, but then from Catania to Palermo it's a 2 hr drive (or 2h 45 min. by train or bus) If you can find a flight on Volotea on your date of travel, I'd fly. There is a bus that takes you from Sorrento to Naples airport in just over 1 hour for 10 euro (CurreriViaggi.it)
